About This Performance
Combining intelligence and insight with bravura technical command, award-winning pianist Garrick Ohlsson has won audiences the world over with his unforgettable performances. His recital includes four of the most beloved of Beethoven’s extraordinary piano sonatas.
With its emotional force and striking melodies and harmonies, the “Pathétique” was not only a major early success for Beethoven, but crucially important in establishing him as more than just a pianist.
With its nickname “Appassionata,” Beethoven’s Op. 57 naturally includes moments of passion and drama, but it also contains a quintessential slow movement in Beethoven’s primary and most comfortable form: theme and variations.
Surpassing his previous piano sonatas in scope, the “Waldstein” is a significant early work of Beethoven’s “heroic” period, among the greatest and most technically challenging of all his sonatas.
One of Beethoven’s most popular piano compositions, even in his own day, the so-called “Moonlight” Sonata was dedicated to one of his pupils, Countess Giulietta Guicciardi. Designated as a sonata “quasi una fantasia” (in the manner of a fantasy), it is highly experimental in form.
